The Alm is probably one of the quietest places in the entire Kaiser Mountains and Kaiserwinkl, and this is also very much appreciated by the farmers. The Hochalm has had a modern alpine dairy since autumn 2019, which processes 1,200 liters of milk every day.
The fresh milk is used to make spicy alpine cheese, which has to mature for at least three months and it can do this in peace in the earth cellar on the alpine pasture. The cheese wheels lie in the cellar and are repeatedly rubbed with salt to stimulate the rind to develop.
June to August, open during the day (closed when it rains)
3 hours walking time (one direction)
The main road to Kössen to the Seehotel Brunner, turn right at the hotel, past the Gasthof Eßbaum over the bridge to the Weissenbachhof intersection, left at the intersection, after 100m right again towards Raineralm (serviced) 3.5km further on a flat gravel forest path over beautiful, gently sloping alpine pasture area. The last 3 km to the Feldalm are steeply uphill and require a good level of fitness.
Or a wonderful hike from Walchsee over the Habersauertal or over the Gwirchtalm.
