Framed by the lovely grass peaks of the southern Chiemgau Alps, the Wandberghütte towers high above the Walchsee. The quickest way to get to the private shelter is from the Feistenau hiking car park above Rettenschöss. The direct ascent via the road takes about 1½ hours.
It is much nicer to choose the short detour via the Staudinger Alm and the Wandberg (1454 m). With this variant, you only hike briefly on driveways and mostly move on meadow paths. The ascent over the Staudinger Alm and the Wandberg takes a good 2 hours to walk. From the hiking car park in the Winkl district in Walchsee, no. 55, you can get to the Wandberghütte via the Lochner waterfall within 2 ½ hours.
From the sun-drenched terrace you have a wonderful view of the Kaiser Mountains. Tyrolean delicacies such as cheese dumplings and homemade cakes await hungry hikers.
The Wandberg summit can be reached from the hut in 30 minutes, the Brennkopf (1353 m) in front of the Wandberg also in about 30 minutes. The Lochner Horn (1448 m) further east is climbed in 1 hour, to Geigelstein (1808 m) it takes about 2 hours.
